Heliot Restaurant, Bar and Lounge has opened in recently stored grand Hippodrome Casino in Londons Leicester Square. The Hippodrome promises a Las Vegas experience and has restored many of the grand 1900's features. The Heliot Cocktail Bar and Lounge, located in The Hippodrome casino, will revive the bygone West End glamour reminiscent of the halcyon days of the Atlantic bar and Grill. Heliot takes over the main balcony area overlooking the casino and serves contemporary British and European dishes with a focus on dining, cocktails and of course entertainment. Most exciting is that renowned mixologist Tony Conigliaro, of 69 Colebroke Row fame, has been enlisted to develop unique and varied cocktails at the lounge bar at Heliot (starting in September 2012). He will showcase his extraordinary molecular mixology skills and will importantly offer happily affordable drinks prices with £4.00 for a glass of wine and cocktails from £7.50.
Heliot lounge bar is remimiscent of a classic Gentleman's club with sumptuous seating areas and bottle service will make this a sought after venue, thankfully without membership being a necessity. In addition, this London casino bar will contain a seperate room called The Matcham Room that will double up as a performance space, hosting established stars from the West End and Broadway and world-class music legends as well as championing emerging talent. The building actually opened in the 1890's as the 100-bed Queen's Hotel beside the Empire Theatre. In 1936 architect Cecil Masey was comissioned to convert the hotel lobby area in a 350 seat newsreel theatre for the Monseigneur circuit.
The theatre had a marquee above which was a neon lit board with the theatre's name in large letters. When newsreels ended production in the late-1950's it was taken over by Jacey Cinemas in June 1960 and went over to screening non-stop 1 hour shows of cartoons, re-named Jacey Cartoon Cinema.
Leicester Square Casino Restaurants
Ten years later it was re-named Jacey Leicester Square when it began screening soft core ‘adult' movies, opening on 16th April 1970 with 'Wierd Wierdo'. It closed on 24th June 1978 and was converted into a small shopping arcade. In 1983, the building was gutted, removing all traces of the cinema and was converted into restaurant and casino use. The facade still retains its original 1890's appearance.
